The soul-well is normally charged from 0 to maximum during 1 week (it does not depend on size). The catalyst speeds up this process: each level decreases the charge time and thus the regeneration speed by 8 hours.

A catalyst in chemistry is a substance that speeds up a reaction, but isn't consumed in the process, much like the catalyst in this game, where it probably got it's name from.
